EXPERTUNE (2004) Using a Performance Monitor to Connect to a Historical Database

There are many economic benefits to monitoring the performance of plants and the health of process
control systems. Performance monitors need process data to evaluate the performance. Performance
monitors can get the data real-time via OPC but many plants already have historians available that are
now collecting process data.
Historical data from historians can be obtained via the OPC HDA specification. However, how will the
effects of compression and sampling effect the results of the performance assessments? This paper will
review and analyze these effects and make recommendations for sampling and compression using
historical databases.
