In industrial electrical temperature measurement, two groups of sensors are commonly used: Resistance temperature detectors (RTD) Thermocouples (TC) Both sensor types have their advantages and disadvantages. The commonly used Pt100 RTDs are especially suited for measurements in the lower to middle temperature range (-200 … +600 °C). Thermocouples, however, (apart from a few exceptions) have their advantages at higher temperatures (up to 1600 °C). Some thermocouples can measure even higher temperatures (tungsten-rhenium, gold-platinum or platinum-palladium). These very specific thermocouples are not described in this document. ​
